Natural and renewable 'peat replacement' great news for growers

Natural and compostable growing mats for cress, mustard and herbs etc

A NATURAL and renewable ‘peat replacement’ growing mat from Sirane could be great news for producers of cress, mustard, herbs and retailers selling ‘live food plants’.

Sow-And-Grow Resolve mats are a new growing medium which is 100% natural, 100% compostable and 100% renewable – and can be used instead of traditional peat products.

Gillian Carter, horticultural sales executive, said: “The mats are a plant-based fibre which is 100% natural and compostable. The open structure of the mats encourages root penetration, water retention and growth. We have had some very impressive trials results.

“Unlike many other alternative growing materials on the market, the Sow-And-Grow Resolve mats have low levels of microbial contamination, which avoids the potential introduction of unwanted pathogenic microbes into domestic or commercial situations.”

Sow-And-Grow Resolve mats are available in two grades, 600gsm and 1200gsm, and can be supplied as a roll or cut to size. Additional products grades may also be made available.

Sow-And-Grow Resolve is the latest product to be added to Sirane’s horticultural product range, which includes compostable flower packaging and absorbent solutions.

Sirane offers crepe flower wraps and protective rose-stem wraps, water-retaining flower pouches and compostable wraps/films for fresh flowers and compostable plant pots.

Gillian Carter added: “Many of our materials and absorbent products are perfect for flower packaging and for protecting fresh flowers during transportation. We’ve used our expertise in material science, shelf-life and absorbency to develop a range of products.

“We can offer a range of pouches for cut flowers, in a range of colours, different absorbencies and different sizes, so whatever your requirement, we are able to help. These can even be used with our compostable wraps as a complete packaging solution.”

Sirane is an innovative packaging design, development, manufacture and solutions company with four divisions: horticultural; food packaging; medical & healthcare, and industrial. The company specialises in areas including absorbency and oven-ready/microwaveable products, compostable packaging, films, boards, absorbent pads, and much more.

Water-retaining flower pouches

WATER-RETAINING flower pouches are a great way to help keep cut flowers fresher for longer – and Sirane can offer a wide range of sizes, absorbencies and colours.

“We have a wide range of colours available, and can even supply them printed. If you’re looking for a way to stop flowers wilting during transportation, then this is the answer.”

Flower packaging for roses: protection for stems and handler

Flower packaging solutions: protective wraps for rose stems

A NEW flower packaging solution from Sirane will protect both roses from damage and handlers from sharp thorns during transportation – as well as maintaining a water supply.

Flower-Fresh rose stem wrap is used to wrap the delicate stems. The cushioning on the Flower-Fresh rose stem wrap prevents the thorns getting damaged accidentally. The same cushioning layer protects anyone handling the rose stems.

Gillian Carter, horticultural sales executive, said: “The wrap can be moistened before use, providing a water supply to the stems during transportation, and helping to ensure that the roses arrive at their destination in the best possible condition.

“Flower-Fresh rose stem wraps are available in a wide range of colours & absorbencies and various sizes. A compostable version of this wrap is also available.”

A number of innovative new flower packaging solutions and other horticultural products including natural growing mats were recently added to Sirane’s horticultural catalogue.
